With the high cost of fuel expected this winter the Building Department anticipates residents to be installing supplemental systems.  The Building Department would like to remind residents that all solid-fuel heating equipment requires a heating permit and an inspection prior to the use of the equipment.  This would include equipment such as:  wood stoves, gas stoves, all fireplaces, pellet stoves, and any other solid-fuel burning appliance.

Please call the Building Department at 720-7104 with any questions.

Unvented Fireplaces ……Are They Legal?

They are quick and easy to install, no muss, no fuss, and ILLEGAL in Wisconsin!  Unvented fireplaces do not have a chimney or flue (something to vent waste gases into the outside air) and can cause sickness or death according to the WI Dept. of Industry, Labor and Human Relations.  State law does not prohibit the sale of these devices, ONLY THEIR USE.  The fine is $10.00 to $100.00 per day.

WI Uniform Dwelling Code which governs one and two family residences, and the Commercial Building Code which governs all public building and places of employment, including apartment buildings and condominiums, prohibits unvented spaces heaters and unvented fireplaces fueled by natural gas, kerosene, alcohol or other fuel due to concerns about oxygen depletion; contamination from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde and other combustion related contaminants and water vapor buildups.
