Child Seat Safety Checks:  Do you need one?

The scary truth is that four out of five safety seats are used incorrectly, with an average of three (3) mistakes per seat, reports the Washington, D.C.-based National Safe Kids Campaign.  And, mistakes can be deadly.  Consider these chilling statistics:  In 2001, nearly 500 children under age 5 were killed in car crashes, and more than 200 of those kids were in seats designed to save their lives.  And as many as 31,700 kids were injured--in car seats.

Common mistakes include:  seat too loose, harness too loose, facing wrong direction, wrong angle, retainer clip, wrong slots, no booster seat, and recalled seats just to name a few.

Luckily, there's something you can do to make your child safer!  We urge you to please contact Pam Jentz at the Town of Menasha Fire Department as soon as possible and schedule a time to have your seat(s) checked free of charge.  Pam is a child passenger safety technician, and can inspect your child safety seats free of charge.  Your child's safety and your peace of mind is Pam's main concern!
