We're looking for a few good Fire Fighters

Here is your chance to become involved in the community, develop new friendships and enter into an exciting part-time career.  The Town of Menasha Fire Department has periodic openings for the position of fire fighter, and should you qualify, you can become a member of one of the most progressive fire departments in the state.

Becoming a member...

Several steps are required for all candidates to become a fire fighter with the Town of Menasha including eligibility requirements as follows:

  • You must be a United States Citizen
  • You must be 18 years of age
  • You must be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • You must possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license
  • You must live within two miles of the Town of Menasha or within a distance approved by the Chief

Further Candidate screening will be used to evaluate abilities as they relate to fire fighter performance.  Candidates will be asked to:

  • Complete a Town of Menasha employment application
  • Undergo a background and/or records check
  • Take a physical examination by a physician at the expense of the Town of Menasha
  • Participate in a standard job-related motor skills assessment

Candidates who successfully meet all of the requirements of the screening process may be interviewed by department members.  The final step in the hiring process is approval by the Town of Menasha Board of Supervisors from the Fire Chief's recommendations.  After appointment to the department, the fire fighter must successfully complete a 12 month probationary period.  Women and minority candidates are highly encouraged to apply.  Citizens available for response during weekdays are particularly needed.

Active Status

Within one year of appointment to the department, the fire fighter must successfully complete a fire fighter's certification program through an approved agency (normal Fox Valley Technical College).  This requirement shall be waived should the fire fighter provide proof through official school or department records that the individual has met this provision.  The fire fighter may be tested on these practical skills to help determine his/her competency with regard to the basic skills.

To maintain employment with the department, the following requirements must be achieved by all department members on a yearly basis.

  • Respond to at least 30% of alarms assigned to their station.
  • Attend at least 50% of all drills assigned.
  • Attend 10 hours of training outside of the department's training program.

Position Summary

Firefighting requires skill in combating and extinguishing fires, in answering calls and operating and maintaining fire department equipment, apparatus and stations.

The position involves extensive training in the operation of apparatus, tools and equipment.  You may be required to perform hazardous tasks under emergency conditions, including strenuous exertion under such handicaps as heat, smoke and cramped surroundings.  Climbing ladders and performing fire fighting operations on roofs may be necessary.

Compensation

Members will be compensated for work performed according to the following:

  • Fire calls, emergencies and departmental sponsored training are paid at a rate of approximately $11.50 per hour.  Also, members are paid $3.00 per 'paged' fire incident responded to for travel and other expenses.
  • One week unpaid vacation after one year (during this week, calls missed will not count against your stats, but calls made will count toward your stats).
