Purpose of Position

The purpose of this classification is to maintain Park and Recreation Department buildings, grounds and equipment.  The work is performed under the immediate direction of the Park Foreman with guidance from Town Board, Park Commission, and Director of Parks and Recreation.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.


·         Maintains and repairs all department park and playground equipment.

·         Maintains department parks and grounds; mows lawns, trims bushes and trees, cuts brush, maintains trails

·         Plows and removes snow and ice from walks, trails and parking lots.  Will be assigned a street route as needed.

·         Assist in flower bed planning, planting and maintenance

·         Assist in tree planting, maintenance, inventorying and developing Tree USA status

·         Employee will be schedule/required to work weekend and holidays


Additional Tasks and Responsibilities


While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this classification and may also be performed by other unit members.


·         Maintains and repairs department equipment; maintains and repairs vehicles, lawnmowers, small engines

·         Maintains and repairs department buildings and shelters; performs carpentry, metal fabrication, woodworking, painting and masonry/cement work; and repairs plumbing and electrical systems.

·         Cleans department facilities.

·         Performs other related functions as required or assigned.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions


High school diploma or equivalent with two years of related labor/trades experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication


·         Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.


·         Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.


·         Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information such as work orders, vehicle/equipment maintenance logs and manuals, material safety data sheets, operating instructions, schedules and records.


·         Requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing with


Mathematical Ability


·         Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.


Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability


·         Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.


·         Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.


Physical Requirements


·         Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery such as tractors, dump trucks, back hoes, lawn mowers, shop tools, small engines, requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments.  Ability to repair complex equipment and machinery.


·         Requires the ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as assembling.


·         Tasks involve the ability to exert regular and sustained heavy physical effort with an emphasis on climbing and balancing which also involves stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty to fifty pounds; and may occasionally involve objects and materials up to 100 pounds.


·         Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.





Environmental Adaptability


·         Ability to work under potentially dangerous and uncomfortable conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature and noise extremes, strong odors, chemicals, toxic agents, dust, machinery, or electrical currents can cause discomfort and where there is a risk of injury.


·         Ability to comply with all Town safety polices and procedures
